Negative Times a Positive Number
Introduction :
Positive numbers (plus) are any numbers greater than zero, for example: 1, 3.9, 4.151, 8000, and 0.1235 We can write the opposite of a positive number (plus sign) by putting negative or minus sign in front of the number and call these numbers as negative numbers. The opposites of the numbers would be: -2, -3.8, -4.1248, -5000 and -0.2563. Negative numbers are less than zero. A negative times positive numbers are always gives a negative number.
Examples of a negative times a positive number:
Ex 1:Simplify the following term: -8(56) =?
Solution: We can calculate the result of negative time’s positive number by using the following steps:
Step 1: First we can identify the given problem.
Step 2: We can learn about minus *minus =positive
minus * positive = minus
positive * minus =minus
positive * positive =positive
In this problem, we can take the second property.
That is, - * + = -
Therefore we are multiplying the values of -8 and 56.
Then we get the final answer.
-8(56) = -448
Ans: -448
Ex 2: Simplify the following term: -8y(5) =?
Solution: Here we can multiply the term -8y and 5 and also it has minus * positive = minus property.
Therefore, -8y (5) =-40y
Ans: -40y
Ex 3:Simplify the following term: -25 * (100)
Solution: We can calculate the result of negative times positive number by using the following steps:
Step 1: First we can identify the given problem.
Step 2: Use the above rules (Minus and Positive rules)
That is, - * - = +
Therefore we are multiplying the values of -25 and 100
Then we get the final answer.
-25(100) = -2500
Ans: -2500
Practice problems of negative times a positive number:
Simplify the following problems:
1) -20(30) =?
2) -3(15) =?
3) -15(10) =?
4) -100(1000) =?
5) -50(50) =?
Answer keys:
1) -600
2) -45
3) -150
4) -100000
5) -2500
